Once I was asked to photograph a teacher and student in a New York City public school for United Way of NYC. The idea was to show the teacher giving guidance in conversation to the student. The communications person I was working with wasn’t sure that we would get permission from the student’s parents to use a photo. I came up with the idea to have the two of them in a stairwell with a window behind them so they where backlit by the window. This way they were seen in silhouette which worked like a charm. I decided to shoot it in black and white, which really added to its intensity. United Way used the photo for years and I still think it works well to this day.
